Laparoscopic vs Open Hernia Repair

The abdomen is made up of muscles and supportive tissues that protect the internal organs. A hernia happens when there is a tear, weakness or gap in the muscle or tissue that allows the internal organs to bulge out. Hernias are often associated with ageing, wear and tear of the muscles, injury, surgery and congenital defects.

Surgery used to treat hernias are known as hernia repairs. They can be performed via open, laparoscopic, minimally invasive, or robotic techniques, depending on the assessment and skill of the surgeon.

What’s the Difference Between Laparoscopic & Open Hernia Repair?

Laparoscopic hernia repair and open hernia repair both have advantages and disadvantages; although the laparoscopic approach is generally preferred in suitable cases. Depending on the patient’s individual condition and needs, the surgeon will recommend the best approach for him or her accordingly.

Laparoscopic surgery requires just a few small incisions around the affected site. This technique uses a specialised instrument called a laparoscope, which is a long and thin instrument connected to a light and camera at the end. The laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen through an incision in order to project clear images from inside the body onto a viewing monitor. Specialised surgical tools are also used to allow surgeons to make precise cuts and manoeuvres within a small space.

On the other hand, open hernia repair is performed by creating a long incision across the affected site in order to fully access and fix the hernia. In both techniques, once the hernia sac is identified, the surgeon will push it back into its rightful position. Then, using stitches or a piece of mesh, the abdominal wall or supporting tissues are closed and reinforced.

Hernia repair is usually an outpatient procedure that does not require an overnight hospital stay.

Advantages of Open Hernia Repair
  • It is more affordable than laparoscopic surgery
  • It can repair the largest and most complex hernias
Disadvantages of Open Hernia Repair
  • It requires a longer recovery time
  • A larger incision is required, which increases the amount of scarring and bleeding involved

Advantages of Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Patients will have a faster recovery
  • Only small incisions are made during this surgery, resulting in minimal post-operative discomfort, scarring, and risk of complications involved

Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Surgery

  • It is more expensive since it requires advanced tools and more skilful surgeons to perform it
  • It may not be suitable for repairing large and complex hernias

With the advancement of medicine, there are now more methods for treating hernias of all types and complexities. When it comes to a hernia repair, the choice of surgery will depend on the size, location, and type of hernia; among others.
